Blanca Callén

Assistant Professor ·  UOC/UVIC-UCC

Currently, I am a researcher and teacher in different universities and degrees: I work as an associate professor in the Psychology degree at the UVIC-UCC and I am a collaborating professor in the Master of Philosophy for Contemporary Challenges at the UOC and in the design degree at Elisava, University School of Design and Engineering of Barcelona (UVIC-UCC). I also teach as a guest lecturer in masters and doctoral programs in social sciences, art or design at the University of Barcelona, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat Ramón Lllull, Universidad del País Vasco, Universidad de la República (Uruguay). I am part of the faculty of the Citizen Laboratories of the Ministry of Culture.

My field of research is the Social Studies of Science and Technology (STS) and my interests revolve around material cultures, design and collective action in the face of the ecosocial crisis. In recent years I have been researching on the production of material waste, e-waste and cultures of repair in a context of climate crisis.

I have a degree in Psychology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (extraordinary prize) and a PhD from the same university with the doctoral thesis entitled “Techno-activism: The political experience of Riereta.net” (extraordinary prize). Between 2012 and 2014 I developed my post-doctoral research at the Center for Science Studies (CSS), Department of Sociology at Lancaster University. This project led to the co-founding of the association Restarters BCN, where we work for the promotion and expansion of repair cultures and the promotion of ecological and economic transition in Barcelona.

I have been a visiting researcher at the Department of Sociology V, Complutense University of Madrid (2005); at the Centre for the Study of Invention and Social Process, Goldsmiths College, London (2007); at the Institute of Social Psychology, Faculty of Psychology, University of the Republic (Montevideo) (2018); and at the Faculty of Architecture and Design, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Faculty of Social Work, University of Chile (2022).

I am a member of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) and of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), of the Scientific-Artistic Committee of EINA/LAB Collserola (EINA/Obra Foundation), of the Scientific Council of the Urban Innovation Platform BIT Habitat (Ajuntament de Barcelona), and member of the editorial board of several scientific journals in the field of HSSC and design.

I received the 1st José María Rubio Award for Advances in the Knowledge of Immigration (2002), the “Bones idees per canviar el món 2018” award from the Xarxa +Sostenibilitat of the Ajuntament de Barcelona to the Restarters BCN Association, and two mentions to the ADI Cultura award from the FAD (Foment de les Arts i el Disseny) of Barcelona in 2018 and 2022.
