El movimiento animalista y la producción de carne in vitro

2020

The political action of the animalism movement is exceeding its traditional ways of vindication through institutional participatory tools, increasing its presence in the media and social networks, besides empowering and connecting activists and, eventually, including in the social and political agenda questions about how we should act, and why, with animals. The work of the animal liberation movement is also focusing on the protection of animals intended for livestock, but the accomplishments are certainly very slight. However, an emerging technological proposal challenges its actors and their collective actions. With the advent of in vitro meat, created from stem cells, meat products can be obtained without sacrificing animals, which offers interesting applied possibilities, but it is as well a project with drawbacks related. Still, the option of growing meat excites many because of the confluence of benefits that it promises. We analyze, from the Science, Technology and Society Studies (STS), how Spanish animalism, identified as a Relevant Social Group (RSG) in the development of this technoscience, dialogues with the in vitro meat phenomenon, and the way it presents a new model of activism, whose objectives and political action are part of the construction of new realities.
